I was coached a rowing style decades ago that made greater use of the glutes, via a more open hip angle early in the stroke. It was not popular for a few reasons, but not due to ineffectiveness. A modified squat, I call a row squat hits this well. But nearly all who row rarely get that open hip angle.
This greater use of the hip strength precludes or makes unnecessary the extreme angle and torso swing seen in much rowing.
